1.Important InformationNOTICERead these instructions carefully, and look at the equipment to bee familiar with the device before trying to install, operate,or maintainit. The following special messages may appear throughout this documentation or on the equipment to warn of potential hazards or to callattention to information that clarifies or simplifies a procedure. The addition of this symbol to a Danger or Waming safety label indicates that an electrical hazard exists, which will result inpersonnal injury if the instruction are not followed. This is the safety alert symbol. It is used to alert you to potential personal injury hazards.Obey all safety messages that followthis symbol to avoid possible injury or death.A DANGERDANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation, which,if not avoided, will result in death, serious injury, orequipment damage.A WARNINGWarning indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which,if not avoided, can result in death, serious injury, orequipment damage.A CAUTIONCAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which,if not avoided, can result in injury or equipmentdamage.PLEASE NOTEElectrical equipment should be serviced only by qualified personnel. No responsibility is assumed by Schneider Electric for any2006 Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved.2.Before you beginRead and understand these instructions before performing any procedure with this drive.A DANGERHAZARDOUS VOLTAGERead and understand this bulletin in its entirety before installing or operating Altivar 71 drive. This equipment must only be installed, adjusted, repaired, and maintained by qualified personnel. The user is responsible for pliance with all intemational and national electrical standards in force concerningprotective grounding of all equipment. Many parts of this variable speed drive, including the printed circuit boards, operate at the line voltage.DO NOT TOUCH.Use only electrically insulated tools.DO NOT touch unshielded ponents or terminal strip screw connections with voltage present.DO NOT short across terminals PA and PC or across the DC bus capacitors.Install and close all the covers before applying power or starting and stopping the drive. Before servicing the variable speed driveDisconnect all power.Place a "DO NOT TURN ON"label on the variable speed drive disconnect.Lock the disconnect in the open position.Disconnect all power including external control power that may be present before servicing the drive.WAIT 15 MINUTES to allow the DC bus capacitors to discharge. Then follow the DC bus voltage measurementprocedure given in the Installation Manual to verify that the DC voltage is less than 45 VDC.The drive LEDs are notaccurate indicators of the absence of DC bus voltage.Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.A WARNINGDAMAGED EQUIPMENTDo not install or operate any drive or drive accessory that appears damaged. The relays, inputs,or outputs of a damageddrive may not operate in a normal manner, leading to unintended equipment operation.Failure to follow this instruction can result in death, serious injury,or equipment damage.AWARNINGLOSS OF CONTROLThe designer of any control scheme must consider the potential failure modes of control paths and,for certain criticalcontrol functions, provide a means to achieve a safe state during and after a path failure.Examples of critical controlfunctions are emergency stop and overtravel stop.Separate or redundant control paths must be provided for critical control functions.System control paths may include munication links.Consideration must be given to the implications of unanticipatedtransmission delays or failures of the link.*EEach implementation of an Altivar 71 Modbus TCP/IP EtherNet/IP card must be individually and thoroughly tested forproper operation before being placed into service.Failure to follow this instruction can result in death, serious injury,or equipment damage. For additional information, refer to NEMA ICS 1.1 (latest edition),"Safety Guidelines for the Application,Installation, andMaintenance of Solid State Control"and to NEMA ICS 7.1 (latest edition),"Safety Standards for Construction and Guide forSelection,Installation and Operation of Adjustable-Speed Drive Systems".53.Documentation structureThe following Altivar 71 technical documents are available on the Web site
